Report a concern by filing a Complaint

Filing a formal complaint begins legal proceedings as described in Iowa Code section 68B.32B. We encourage you to review these procedures before filing a formal complaint.

All formal complaints must include the name and address of the complainant, a statement of the facts believed to be true that form the basis of the complaint (including sources and approximate dates of the acts alleged), and a certification by the complainant under the penalty of perjury that the facts stated to be true are true to the best of the complainant's knowledge. Click here to access our formal complaint form. Supporting documentation/evidence of alleged violations (not to exceed 10MB) should be included when possible.

Please note our jurisdiction is limited to enforcing the laws in Iowa Code chapter 68A and 68B for the executive branch of state government.

Board staff work to effectively resolve cases of noncompliance informally when possible and appropriate. Examples of matters which are typically resolved with the cooperation of the regulated party without formal investigation include:

  • Improperly-placed campaign signs
  • Lack of "paid for by" attribution on published campaign materials
  • Late-filed ethics or campaign disclosure reports
